6 Best Evangelism Tips
Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern in how I usually talk with others about God.
May I share some main “tips” for you?
1. I usually am not trying to insert “God” into the conversation.
I’m not looking for a small crack in the door that I can rush through and hijack the conversation to now be about spiritual things. In other words, I’m not trying to force the person into talking about God. I try not to be rude.
2. I seek to love and enjoy the other person.
Sometimes I need to silently pray, “God, give me your love for this person.”
3. I show interest in them, ask them questions about themselves. And listen, curious to know more.
The person feels valued and respected by you (I hope). Eventually, simply out of politeness, the person will ask you a question about yourself.
4. When they ask me, I tell them, “I’m connected with a website that seeks to answer the really hard questions about life and God…like, it gives evidence for God’s existence, and how a person can find the life God created them to have. It’s in 40 languages and really popular — more than 50,000 people a day go to it.”
You can say, I’m in the (name your field of business). But what I really enjoy is, I’m connected to a website that takes on the big questions of life and God. I think it does a great job of…. (giving evidence for God’s existence, or explaining why we can have meaning in life, or describing why Jesus is important — pick one).
5. If they show interest, the conversation will continue.
We might talk about questions they have about God. I might share with them how I came to faith, or what I’ve seen God do in my life. I might encourage them to read a particular article on EveryStudent.com, or sign up for The Spiritual Adventure Pack (for skeptics or atheists). I might mention StartingwithGod.com if I find out they are a believer.
If they don’t show interest, I usually go back to asking them a question about their business.
This lets them know that I’m ok not cornering them in a spiritual conversation. In fact, even if the conversation goes deep on spiritual things, I will sometimes switch it back to a secular topic, then ask a spiritual question of them later. I want to be sensitive to them and let them know they’re not a target for me to convert. They are a person that I care about.
6. At least by the end of our conversation, I’ll say, “Here, let me give you a card to the website. It will let you explore questions about God on your own. If you have a question, you can email it, and someone will personally email you a reply.” Then I hand them a card to EveryStudent.com. I might also put my email address on the back of it.
