Study #5: What is prayer all about?

Begin with prayer: “God, ask you to speak to me through your Word, the Bible. Speak to my heart to understand what you want to say to me. Amen.”

Nahum 1
7The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.

Q – What three things does this tell you about God’s character?

Q – In light of that, what action does God want you to take?

1 Peter 5
7Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

Philippians 4
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Q – What does God want us to do with our concerns?

1 Thessalonians 5
16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Q – In what way do you think these three commands relate to each other?

1 John 5
14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15And if we know that He hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of Him.

Q – What prayers does God answer?

Romans 8
26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

Q – How does the Holy Spirit help us in our prayers?

Hebrews 4
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess…16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

1 Timothy 2
5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

John 14 — Jesus speaking:
13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Q – When your prayers are answered, how does it glorify God?

Psalm 66
18If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened…

Psalm 145
18The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.

Q – What do these verses tell us about the sincerity and honesty God desires when we talk to Him?

Psalm 62
5Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. 6He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.

Q – According to these verses, what does God want us to believe about Him….how does God want us to trust Him, as we pray?
